Summary

On the night of August 25, 1955, a man in Green Bay, Wisconsin reported seeing several unusual objects while standing outside his home. He described a small helicopter about four to five feet tall with three-foot rotors that landed about 100 to 150 feet away. He claimed to see something that looked like a small man or dog run from the aircraft. He also reported seeing small transparent parachutes descend nearby, each with a foot-high figure running away from it. The next night, he saw what might have been a wing-shaped aircraft, though he was uncertain. Several weeks earlier, he had also seen a circular object with a red glow moving across the sky from north to south.

The observer said he stumbled over pieces of pottery while chasing one of these objects. He did not believe the pottery had fallen from the aircraft but thought it might be part of a casserole dish cover. Local police and detectives who visited his home agreed the material looked like pottery from a casserole lid. They noted that the man appeared sober but had a flushed face, and that he had been under a doctor's care for some time before the sighting, though they could not learn what his ailment was. The man had been a member of the Ground Observer Corps for two years and had no military service.

The Air Force investigation, conducted by the 4602nd Air Intelligence Surveillance Squadron, found serious problems with the account. The investigating officer noted that the observer had claimed to witness other unusual events on several occasions, raising doubts about his reliability. The officer concluded that the sighting showed signs of fantasy and fabrication. Because the observer himself said he did not believe the pottery came from the object, and because the overall story seemed implausible, the Air Force classified this case as a hoax. The approving officer agreed, stating the sighting was fabricated.
