Summary

On the evening of September 8, 1952, several people across the Fresno area of California reported seeing an unusual object in the sky. The sightings occurred between roughly 7:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and were observed from scattered locations including Dinuba, Fresno proper, Hanford, and Kingsburg. All observations were made with the naked eye, as no optical or electronic equipment was used by any witness.

The object appeared to observers in different ways. Some described it as pale, shining, and elliptical in shape, though it seemed to shorten to nearly circular as it moved. Others reported it resembled a comet tail or had two short trails extending from it that looked "hot dog" shaped. Witnesses disagreed on color, with descriptions ranging from pale yellow that turned reddish, to resembling a brilliantly lit half moon, to appearing "mercurous" or molten like the sun at noon. The most consistent detail was the presence of one or two trailing plumes that stretched roughly fifteen times longer than they were wide. The object moved slowly and descended at first before turning to a horizontal course heading north. It remained visible for approximately twenty minutes.

The U.S. Air Force investigated by checking with local aircraft facilities, but found no records of any known aircraft in the area at that time. One observer was a meteorologist from the Fresno Weather Bureau, who discounted his own sighting as a normal contrail (condensation trail left by a jet aircraft) enhanced by its position against the setting sun. The official Air Force intelligence report noted that one observer was classified as a "saucer fan" with strong interest in the subject, while the meteorologist explained the phenomenon as likely caused by sunlight reflecting off a vapor trail at high altitude. The weather was clear with light and variable winds. The case file does not contain a final determination of what the object was. All 15 pages of the original case file are reproduced below as held by the National Archives.
