Summary

On February 23, 1953, at about 2126 (use of the Z time group), a civilian woman reported an unidentified object over Fortville, Indiana, about 16 miles northeast of Indianapolis. She reported it to the 762nd Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron, the nearest Air Force unit.

The object was circular and white with a smoke ring around it. It was at a very high altitude and was heading northeast. She watched it for about five minutes. The weather was clear.

The Air Force found that a weather balloon was scheduled for release around that time by the Indianapolis weather station. The object was seen about 15 minutes after the balloon went up, and winds aloft would have carried it toward Fortville. The Air Force concluded the cause was a balloon.
