Project Blue Book Case File
Fletcher, OhioFebruary 1960
Summary
In February 1960, a person in Fletcher, Ohio saw an object that briefly caught their attention. The object appeared as a white light with a solid center and blurred edges, roughly the size of a basketball. It did not move during the roughly 15 seconds the witness observed it, then went out like a light and disappeared.
The Air Force investigated the sighting and reviewed the circumstances. In the brief summary section of the case file, an investigator noted that the object was "probably the ceilometer at Cox Airport measuring the cloud base," and added that the witness had been "looking over the Airport at time of measurement." A ceilometer is a ground instrument that uses a light beam to measure how high clouds are above the ground. The file indicates the Air Force concluded the sighting was most likely a balloon, though "probably balloon" and other explanations were also listed as possibilities.
The case file contains 9 pages as held by the National Archives.
