Summary

On September 8, 1950, near Fairchild Air Force Base in Washington, witnesses reported a bright light, one of several sightings near the base around that date. The report is part of Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports.

A pilot walking in the officer housing area about 10:20 p.m. saw a bluish white light, about the size of an auto headlight, coming from the north. It passed over the western edge of the field, grew larger, gave off sparks in a trail for a few seconds, then abruptly went out. No sound was heard and no aircraft were in the area.

The file also describes other sightings. The wife of an officer saw a similar light from a car days earlier. An observer relaxing in his Spokane yard saw three flat, pancake shaped objects, 20 to 30 feet across, that moved on their own and hovered before heading toward the base.

The Air Force listed its conclusion for this case as a meteor observation.
