Summary

On July 16, 1951, near Fairborn, Ohio, a civilian reported a strange object between about 2100 and 2115 (9:00 to 9:15 p.m.). The witness, who worked at a public information office, first took the object to be a star but realized after about a second that it moved.

He described it as bluish white and as bright as an ordinary star, glimmering much like a star, at what seemed an extreme altitude. The object moved toward the southeast, hovered like a helicopter, then moved from side to side like a free balloon, hovering again before continuing on. His wife also watched and agreed it moved at great speed. There was no sound. The whole sighting lasted about five minutes before the object faded into haze near the moon.

The Air Force recorded the case in Project 10073, its official file for unidentified flying object reports. The conclusion was a balloon.
