Summary

On April 29, 1957, radar over the English Channel near France picked up a fast object. The report came from a news clipping, not a direct sighting. The object was tracked moving at a speed in excess of 900 miles per hour. Royal Air Force jet fighters were scrambled to chase it, but they did not make an intercept.

The record is Project 10073, the Air Force's official file for unidentified flying object reports. The card describes the case as probably an aircraft. The comment states the object was believed to be a French model of a new type of aircraft during testing. News accounts cited in the file linked the object to a new French jet fighter.
