Ellsworth AFB, South DakotaSeptember 1958
Summary
On September 28, 1958, two Air Force lieutenants at Ellsworth Air Force Base, South Dakota, reported an unidentified flying object at 0305Z (night). The witnesses, Lt. Dwyer and Lt. Roggenbuck, described an object the shape of a star, pinpoint in size, flashing red, white, and green. They noticed it because of its flashing and brightness. It was not moving and sat about 30 degrees off the horizon, and it was still visible at the time of the report. No sound was heard, and it was seen with the naked eye.
Sky conditions were clear. The Air Force found the star Arcturus was at about 40 degrees elevation and noted no other first-magnitude planets or stars were at or near that position. The Air Force conclusion on the Project 10073 record card was astronomical, evaluated as probably Arcturus. Project 10073 was the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports.
