Project Blue Book Case File
EL PASO, TEXASSeptember 1952
Summary
On the night of September 14-15, 1952, a civilian engineer and three witnesses near El Paso, Texas observed six separate groups of luminous spheres moving rapidly across the sky in various formations. The sighting began around 11:30 p.m. (12:30 a.m. Mexican time) when the observer's wife spotted the first group of twelve to fifteen brilliant lights traveling in a straight line toward the southwest at extremely high speed, estimated at 1,000 mph, at an altitude of 10 to 12 miles.
Over the next few hours, the observers documented five additional groups of lights. Some formations appeared as simple arcs or lines. Others displayed more unusual patterns, including what the observers described as a perfect inverted "Y" shape, with the leg of the Y pointing in the direction of travel and the arms trailing behind. One group formed a semi-circle with individual lights moving in a wave-like motion. The observer noted that the lights resembled frosted electric light globes, with no visible colors, no apparent means of propulsion, and no sound. The spheres within each group appeared to maintain consistent spacing and moved in apparent harmony, though there were no visible connections between them.
Throughout the eight separate displays, the objects demonstrated precise control. They traveled without veering, yawing, or changing elevation. When passing through areas of haze, the lights appeared dimmer, confirming to the observers that the objects were well above the cloud cover, which meteorological records placed between 12,000 and 15,000 feet. The objects simply vanished from sight rather than disappearing over the horizon, leading the observer to speculate they either turned sharply or the lights were extinguished in sequence.
The Air Force investigation found no known weather phenomena or aircraft activity in the area that would account for the sightings. The source and witnesses were characterized as providing a detailed written account, though the file notes the reliability of the source was undetermined. The case remained classified as unidentified. This case file, held by the National Archives, comprises 25 pages.
