Insufficient Data

Summary

On May 17, 1953, about 1937 (7:37 p.m.) Central time, civilians saw an object over East St. Louis, Illinois. The witnesses were four boys, ages 11 to 13, who described it to an adult who reported it.

The object was aluminum colored and disk shaped with a slightly raised dome on top. It had a dark, almost black edge. It appeared to have exhausts on the underside that gave off smoke. It looked larger than aircraft common to the area. It came from the north, hovered a few seconds, dipped toward the witnesses, and then sped away to the northeast.

The sky was cloudy, but the object appeared in a clear gap between clouds. Severe thunderstorms were recorded in the area before and after the sighting. Scattered clouds were at about 3,300 and 8,000 feet. The Air Force listed the case as insufficient data for evaluation, noting the length and exact time of the sighting were not reported.
