Summary

On July 2, 1958, about 9:15 p.m. (universal time), east of Ascension Island, the crew of the steamship African Planet reported a single bright object. They described a bright red missile-like object traveling from west to east that broke apart in mid-air. The report reached the Air Force through military command channels. The report was filed under Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports. The Air Force concluded the object was probably a bolide, which is a large, bright meteor.
