Project Blue Book Case File
DULUTH MINN, [ILLEGIBLE] 1952Circa 1952
Summary
On the night of July 17, 1952, a man and woman driving on State Highway 33 near Duluth, Minnesota, saw four circular disc-shaped objects flying in formation about 20 miles southwest of the city. The objects gave off a glowing light that was brighter in the center than at the edges. They appeared to be about two feet in diameter.
The couple was driving north at about 25 miles per hour when the objects approached from the north. The objects came up almost directly over their car, then wheeled west in formation like a flock of ducks, then wheeled north, and then vanished. The whole sighting lasted about fifteen seconds. The objects made no sound and left no trail or exhaust. The witnesses estimated the objects were traveling at less than 100 miles per hour and were about 200 feet above the ground when they passed overhead.
The sighting occurred at 0010 Central Standard Time (just after midnight). The witnesses viewed the objects through the automobile windshield. According to the Air Force report, the man was a private investigator and insurance adjuster from St. Paul. The Duluth weather station reported that a thunderstorm with severe lightning was passing over the area at approximately the time of the sighting. The Air Force report notes that the observers did not provide information about the weather conditions they experienced at their location.
The case file includes a standard Air Force sighting report form filled out by the witnesses, a road map of the area, weather data, and communications logs. The file does not state a final conclusion about what the objects were.
