Summary
This file covers two sightings over Dayton, Ohio in May 1953. The first was reported about 0110 (1:10 a.m.) Eastern time on May 12. A civilian called to report a moving object over a road near a golf course. It was watched for about five minutes.
The object first looked like a star. On longer viewing it appeared as a half-moon-shaped white light with a red tail light. It moved back and forth like a pendulum and traveled slowly. The estimated height was 3,000 feet. The Air Force listed this sighting as a balloon, tied to a radiosonde balloon launch at Sulphur Grove.
The second sighting was on May 28, 1953, reported by a civilian and seen by military observers. A woman saw a very bright object arching downward for a short time. The same night, two Air Force scientists saw the same object and described it as a very bright meteor lasting five to six seconds with a green-white glow. The Air Force listed this sighting as astronomical (a meteor).
