Summary

On December 4, 1958, at about 11:30 p.m., a civilian woman in Dayton, Ohio, reported flashes of light and an object. It was raining at the time. She and her husband were in bed when she first saw a flash through a west window.

There were four flashes, each with a muffled retort or noise about ten to fifteen seconds apart. The flashes were orange-yellow with pink at the edges. After the fourth flash, she saw an orange sphere about the size of a grapefruit to the west, above the trees and houses but low in the sky. It glowed orange between the flashes and grew brighter during them. After the last flash it glowed for three or four seconds, then went out like a light bulb.

The witness checked with the power company the next morning and found no electrical problems in the area. The local base was not testing night photography. The Air Force noted the description was typical of lightning but said the witness should be familiar with that. The case was evaluated as insufficient data.
