Summary

In August 1958, a resident of Dayton, Ohio observed a yellow-white object about the size of a golf ball at 5:00 p.m. local time. The witness watched it for approximately two hours as it moved from northeast to southeast across the sky. The object appeared to be made of metal and at one point seemed to burst into flames and drop toward the earth at high speed.

The Air Force investigated the sighting by checking with the local weather station. Officials there reported that a lighted weather balloon had been released that day and had burst, descending by a red parachute. Based on this information, the Air Force concluded the sighting was probably a balloon.

The 10-page case file, including the witness questionnaire and technical summary sheets, is reproduced below as held by the National Archives.
