Summary

In April 1958, an observer in Dayton, Ohio reported seeing a silvery, circular object in the sky. The object was small, about the size of a pinhead when viewed from a distance, and remained stationary throughout the observation period of about ten minutes.

The Air Force investigated the sighting by checking with a local weather station. Officials discovered that a weather balloon had been released at 1827 (6:27 p.m.) on the date of the sighting. Based on wind direction and velocity data, the Air Force determined that the balloon's trajectory would have carried it directly over the spot where the observer saw the object. The case file notes indicate that this information supported a balloon identification.

The Air Force concluded the sighting was probably a balloon. The case file is reproduced below as held by the National Archives across 10 pages.
