Coldwater, OhioApril 1952
Summary
On April 29, 1952, near Coldwater, Ohio, a civilian and three other people reported an unidentified object. The sighting happened at 1940 (7:40 p.m.). The witness called the Air Technical Intelligence Center the next morning to report it.
The object was first seen directly overhead. It then drifted to the northeast and faded into the distance, disappearing at about a 20 degree elevation above the horizon. It appeared disk shaped, as if standing on edge, and was the color of cherry red hot iron. It looked about one eighth the size of a full moon.
The witness thought the object drifted faster than a balloon could. The file notes that the object had qualities of a balloon except for its size, and that weather balloons had been launched in the area earlier in the day. Officials suggested it could have been a pibal balloon, which are difficult to track. The record card lists the conclusion as Probably Aircraft.
