Cockburn Harbor S Caicos Island, Caribbean, May 1958May 1958

Insufficient Data

Summary

On May 29, 1958, near Cockburn Harbor on South Caicos Island in the Caribbean, the crew of a Coast Guard vessel reported a single bright object. The sighting lasted about 10 to 15 seconds. The crew described an unusually bright amber fireball with a tail extending vertically upward. The entire horizon was brightly lit for about 30 degrees. The fireball descended slowly and vertically until it disappeared behind the island. The weather was cloudy with a slight sea and a light easterly wind. The report was filed under Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports. The Air Force noted the slow vertical descent ruled out a meteor and suggested the object was a flare of some kind, from aircraft, naval units, or a ground installation. Because these sources were not checked, the case was considered insufficient data.
