Cinn - Dayton Area- Columbus, OhioJune 1954

Unidentified

Summary

In late June 1954, multiple witnesses across a wide area of central Ohio reported seeing an unusual object in the sky. The sightings occurred on June 26, with reports coming from Zanesville, Dayton, Columbus, Lockbourne Air Force Base, and Mansfield. Several observers described a round, silvery object, and the object was spotted by crew and passengers aboard a United Airlines flight near Columbus as well.

One detailed account came from a civilian observer in Columbus who watched the object from his bathroom window early on the morning of June 26. He described it as football-shaped, with a metallic appearance that reflected the glow of city lights below. As the object turned, he saw what he characterized as a circle of lights in a vertical plane, and then a horizontal row of approximately 15 to 17 yellowish lights resembling incandescent bulbs along its length. The observer estimated the object's size at roughly 200 feet along its major axis and noted it moved at about 30 to 50 miles per hour at an altitude between 1,000 and 2,000 feet. He heard no sound throughout the approximately two-minute observation.

The object was also reported moving in different directions by various ground observers and radio stations. Dayton Tower reported movement toward the station in an eastbound direction, while Zanesville Radio reported it moving northwest at roughly 333 degrees from their station. Military and civilian air traffic control facilities received multiple reports through official channels, and the sightings were documented in Air Force radio traffic transmitted to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio and higher command.

The Air Force evaluated the case as unidentified. The case file, which contains 22 pages of documentation held in the National Archives, includes detailed witness interviews, technical information forms, maps, and official military radio traffic.
