Summary

On February 9, 1958, around 6:10 p.m., near Chiengmai (in Thailand), many people reported a low-flying object moving at high speed. Witnesses, including several Americans, said it moved from west to east at an altitude reported between 600 and 800 feet. Descriptions varied from a rocket shape to round, with colors such as a white nose, orange body, and black tail, plus a white vapor trail with puffs of smoke or green vapor. Some heard a rushing or swooshing sound, but most heard nothing. A French priest about 60 miles to the west also reported a fast object trailing white vapor. The next day, people near a nearby town reported the object had come down in the mountains and felt tremors like an explosion. Ground searches found nothing. The report was filed under Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports. The Air Force concluded the object was apparently a fireball.
