Summary
On February 25, 1953, starting at about 2030 (8:30 p.m.), an unusual target was reported on radar by the 783rd Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron near Charleston, West Virginia. This was a radar sighting tracked by the operations officer, the radar maintenance officer, and the full shift.
The target was oblong, estimated about 2 miles wide and 7 miles long. Ahead of it was a faint string of returns about 30 miles long. It moved at a steady 70 knots on a straight course of 070 degrees. It was first detected about 220 miles out. The shape grew slightly smaller before it faded at about 2145 (9:45 p.m.). Scope photographs were taken at five minute intervals. Weather appeared clear.
No aircraft interception was made. A higher headquarters review of the scope photographs concluded the returns were the result of electronic countermeasures. The card lists the conclusion as countermeasures.
