Summary

On the evening of December 27, 1952, five people driving south on US Highway 83 near Canadian, Texas witnessed an unusual aerial object. Between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. CST, they saw an intense bluish-white light that resembled no conventional aircraft they knew. The sighting lasted about two to three minutes.

The object first appeared in the southeast at an altitude of roughly two to four thousand feet. As it traveled northwest, it climbed steadily to approximately one and a half miles high. The observers, who had pulled their car to the side of the road, watched as sparks and fire trailed behind the object, suggesting an exhaust or propulsion system. The light itself had a fluorescent quality that struck one witness as distinctly different from any aircraft he had encountered. Notably, despite the brilliant display, no sound was heard at any point. The object eventually disappeared by moving beyond their line of sight rather than fading away.

The lead witness, who identified himself as a former B-29 crew chief with experience recognizing standard aircraft, estimated the object's initial speed at two to three hundred miles per hour, increasing to roughly one thousand miles per hour as it climbed. Other observers in the vehicle provided similar accounts, though they differed slightly on whether the object's altitude remained constant or changed during the sighting.

The Air Force initially investigated whether the phenomenon might be a jet aircraft with afterburners activated, possibly based at nearby Amarillo Air Force Base. However, the clear night sky, the absence of engine noise, and the object's unusual light characteristics made this explanation uncertain. The file notes that local air traffic could not be definitively identified. Ultimately, the Air Force concluded the sighting as "possibly aircraft," but did not resolve the case with confidence.
