Camp Crook, Rapid City, S.D., July 1954July 1954
Summary
On July 28 and 29, 1954, military and civilian witnesses near Camp Crook and Rapid City, South Dakota, reported objects in the sky. One witness at Camp Crook saw an object fall about 12 miles south of the city. It was black with exhaust like a jet and traveled very fast. It exploded once in the air and once at or near the ground, with no sound except the explosions.
Later, a series of calls from an airline dispatcher and a filter center reported 50 to 100 objects over Rapid City. Aircraft were scrambled to identify them.
The pilots who were scrambled believed the objects were caused by a thin layer of clouds at 18,000 and 20,000 feet and a large amount of falling stars in the area. The Air Force record card listed the case as a meteor shower.
