Summary
On August 27, 1950, around 6:30 p.m., a civilian pilot reported an object while flying near Brockton, Massachusetts. The witness was a private licensed pilot, and a young passenger, a boy about 12 years old, was with him. The report reached the Air Force through an Army office.
The pilot was flying at about 1,300 feet when he spotted a shiny white spherical object. He estimated it was about 20 feet in diameter and was passing at least 1,000 feet below his plane, heading east at a high rate of speed. He could see no projections or irregularities on its surface and could not give an exact speed, but said it seemed as fast as low flying jets he had seen.
The pilot said the object could not have been windblown, since it held a steady easterly course while the wind was from the south. No exhaust smoke or unusual noise was noticed. The boy also saw the object, and his description matched. The Air Force record card lists the conclusion as balloon.
