Summary

On January 3, 1954, at about 3:55 p.m. local time near Blackburn, Australia, a civilian reported one object. The witness, a silversmith, heard the sound of an aircraft and looked toward it, then saw the object near the sun, about 42 degrees in elevation. It was in sight for about one minute. Four other observers reported similar objects to civil aviation about the same time.

The object was silver and highly reflective. At first it appeared stationary, then moved in direct flight over the horizon to the southeast in about a minute. It was possibly oval, with no details and no tail. It had a whip-like motion and disappeared behind trees on a hill.

The Air Force record lists the conclusion as a reflection. The report noted the witness was trying to locate an aircraft he heard and saw the object near the sun. It concluded he probably saw a reflection from that aircraft but could not make out its features because the sighting was so brief.
