Summary

On the morning of July 1, 1958, an observer near Springfield, Ohio reported seeing an unusual object in the sky. The sighting lasted only five to ten seconds. The object appeared as a round, yellow-white shape that was flat on both ends, with a fuzzy outline. It moved from west-southwest to west across the sky. The observer said the object traveled faster than an airplane but slower than a meteor, which made its speed difficult to classify.

The witness's initial impression was that the object might be a satellite or a meteor. In the questionnaire completed after the sighting, the observer noted the object seemed to glow. The witness was working outdoors at the time and happened to notice the object in the clear sky. According to the file, the observer had technical training and was an assistant director at a technical division, lending some credibility to the observations.

The Air Force investigation concluded the sighting was probably a slow meteor. The file indicates no contradictory evidence or additional investigation was pursued. The full case file, comprising 9 pages as held by the National Archives, is reproduced below.
