Project Blue Book Case File
Baffin Island, November 1958November 1958
Summary
On November 27, 1958, a construction foreman on Baffin Island reported seeing a remarkable object in the early dawn sky. The witness described a cigar or arrow-shaped craft with a blazing green front and bright red patches on the back. The object caught his attention as it moved overhead, and within seconds it displayed unusual behavior: it split apart into five separate pieces, then reunited back into a single object, all within about ten seconds.
The U.S. Air Force received the report and began investigating. The file contains numerous technical documents, weather data, and analysis. However, the OCR quality of many pages is too degraded to extract precise details with confidence. What can be determined is that the case occurred during a period when Mars was particularly bright and close to Earth, and several papers about astronomy and meteor observations from the same time period are included in the file, suggesting the Air Force considered whether the sighting might have an astronomical explanation.
The Air Force's final evaluation for this case was listed as unknown, meaning investigators could not arrive at a definitive explanation for what the witness observed. The full case file is reproduced below as held by the National Archives, containing 37 pages of documents related to this sighting.
