Project Blue Book Case File
ATLANTIC OCEAN, September 1952September 1952
Summary
On the night of September 30, 1952, the crew of the Coast Guard cutter Taney, on Ocean Station Uncle in the Atlantic Ocean, reported an object in the sky that resembled a flying saucer. At the time there was a broken cloud layer at about 5,000 feet and no moon. A luminous, grayish disc appeared near the level of the clouds. It looked about 500 to 600 feet across and seemed to hover about two miles from the ship.
The commanding officer, who had been skeptical of flying saucer reports, was on the bridge and became convinced it was a real object. After hovering for a while, the disc began moving across the sky, slowly at first and then rapidly, reaching an estimated speed of perhaps 300 mph.
The cause then became clear through a break in the clouds. An aircraft in transit several thousand feet above the cloud layer was operating a landing light. The beam could be seen entering the clouds from above, but from below only a sharp oval form appeared, looking solid. The report concluded that had the aircraft not been seen, the event would have been reported as a flying saucer. The record card notes this shows how experienced people can be fooled by light effects, and it was offered as a possible explanation for similar cases.
