ASHIYA AB, JAPAN, August 1952August 1952
Summary
On August 2, 1952, at about 2110 (9:10 p.m.) local time, a staff sergeant and his wife saw a single object at Ashiya Air Base on Kyushu, Japan. The couple were walking south toward their quarters when the object appeared above the southern horizon.
They said it sped across the bay at about 1,000 feet and disappeared over the hills to the northwest. It looked about seven inches across at arm's length, glowed with a very bright white light, and left a rose colored trail. There was no sound and no maneuvers. They compared it to a jet, but with no noise. It was in sight about one second. The weather was scattered clouds at 30,000 feet with ten miles visibility.
A control tower operator recalled seeing a round white disc on July 29, 1952, traveling with a frayed end forward. Air Force comments note that a weather officer was launching small white lighted balloons, and that fireworks were displayed in the town of Ashiya that night about the same time. The record card conclusion lists the object as probably fireworks from the city.
