Summary

On September 27, 1960, military and civilian witnesses at Alamogordo, Las Cruces, White Sands, and Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico reported a bright object at 0905 (about 6:05 p.m. local), in complete darkness. They described a bright green object, about half the diameter of a dime at arm's length. It had no tail at first, then developed a tail 3 to 4 times the object's diameter, with an orange tinge on the outer edge reported by some. The object flew straight and level, then faded out. The sighting lasted 5 to 15 seconds depending on the witness. Visibility was unlimited at all locations. The investigation officer drew no conclusions but noted a similar object was seen the next day from Las Cruces. The Air Force listed the case as similar to a meteor.
