Project Blue Book Case File
Abadan, Iran, May 1953May 1953
Summary
On May 18, 1953, about 1535Z, civilians saw an object over Abadan, Iran. The duration was reported as 20 minutes, and there were many observers.
The object was circular and flew at a very high altitude. Its circumference was said to be greater than the moon. It appeared in one part of the sky and disappeared in another. It had a comet-like tail. The report noted it could not have been a rocket because no smoke trailed behind it.
The Air Force believed there was likely an error in the reported 20 minute duration. It noted that a comet-like tail and a comparison with a rocket pointed to a much greater speed than would fit a 20 minute view. The many observers and the description pointed to a meteor. The Air Force listed the case as astronomical (a meteor).
