Summary
On November 24, 1958, at about 5:25 p.m. (1725Z), a military crew in a WB-50 weather aircraft reported an object northeast of Iceland. The senior pilot, an experienced aircraft commander, gave a statement. The crew was flying at 30,000 feet from a base in England.
The object had the shape, size, and color of a star of medium intensity. It was one in number, with no tail, trail, exhaust, or sound. It gained in brightness for about 15 seconds, then faded for about 15 seconds. The co-pilot first thought it was a falling meteorite but realized it stayed in view longer than a meteor's burn-out time. The object rose from the right rear, made an arc across the flight path reaching a maximum elevation of 35 degrees, and disappeared. It was in view about four minutes.
The sky was clear overhead with scattered clouds below and 100 miles of visibility. The crew believed the object was an earth satellite. The Air Force record notes the object was probably Delta 1, a satellite.
