Summary
On July 2, 1958, a ground observer near Columbia, South Carolina, reported an unidentified flying object at 2015 (8:15 p.m.) local time. The witness, an Army section officer, described one round, white object that looked like a meteor. It flew from east to west on a straight path. The light flickered three or four times, then the object faded out. The sighting lasted 5 to 8 seconds.
The report came from Fort Jackson and was forwarded to Shaw Air Force Base. Weather was partly cloudy with 10 to 15 mile visibility. Six RB-66 jet aircraft from Shaw were flying in the area near the time. The Air Force conclusion on the record card was astronomical, listed as probably a meteor. This card is part of Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports.
