Summary

On May 17, 1963 (Greenwich time May 18), crews aboard Navy ships in the Pacific Ocean reported an object that looked like a falling star of second magnitude. The first sighting, from the USS Savage, placed the object at about 46 degrees north, 171 degrees west, high in the sky on a course of about 284 degrees true. It was first assumed to be a satellite.

About one and a half hours later, the USS Savage reported a second sighting on the same course with the same characteristics. That object was viewed for about 10 seconds and also appeared to be a falling star.

The Air Force, in its Project 10073 record, said the description and duration were consistent with a meteor. It noted the object could not be a satellite because of its direction and duration, and evaluated the case as astronomical, a meteor.
