Summary
On September 26, 1958, a civilian saw a glowing object while driving north on a highway about 4 miles south of Southwick, Massachusetts. The witness was a commercial artist. He first noticed a bright light to his left and slowed his car to watch.
The object was round and glowing red-orange, about the size of a basketball. The witness estimated it was about 20 feet across with a bulbous front. It had a tail of fire about 300 to 500 feet long. The head of the object shot off white sparks in a circular pattern. No sound was heard.
The object made a slight descending path from south to north. It moved for no longer than 3 seconds. It then appeared to explode into a shower of sparks beyond a tree-covered hill. The night was clear with a full moon. A nearby station reported no aircraft in the area at the time. The witness made a sketch and provided color photos.
