Summary
On a private twelve acre lake four miles north of Clennie, Michigan, three observers reported seeing something unusual in the water during July 1958. One observer was in a boat on the lake, one stood on the bank, and a third was positioned about two hundred yards away. All three heard a loud sharp bang or thud as an object struck the water surface.
After the initial impact, the observers reported seeing a circle form in the water about ten feet across with foam around its edge. The circle rose to a height of two to three feet above the surface. The object made a sizzling sound, as if something hot was cooling off in the water. This sizzling lasted for one and a half minutes. The witnesses then watched the object take a zig-zagging course across the lake surface for about two hundred feet, making violent movements in the water before sinking down into fifty feet of water.
The investigation revealed a complication that would prove decisive. The observers reported where the object ended up underwater, but none of them reported actually seeing the object descend from the air before it hit the water. The Air Force intelligence officer at Wurtsmith Air Force Base noted that the report only described an underwater disturbance, not an airborne object. Because Air Force regulations defined a UFO as something seen in the air, and this phenomenon was only observed in the water, it technically fell outside that definition. The officer suggested that weather balloons from Green Bay or Milwaukee, which had previously been recovered in the area, could have created similar disturbances in the water. A small hot meteorite might also have caused the reported effects. The depth of the water prevented any recovery attempt of the object.
