Summary

On July 1, 1961, near Hawaii, military observers reported sighting a bright object at 10:41 a.m. local time. The object appeared high in the sky with a trailing line of light visible for 5 to 10 seconds. It resembled a possible satellite. The object was positioned at 20-25 north latitude and 172-175 west longitude, traveling northwest to southeast. The observation noted a high altitude, head and left trailing light characteristic of a meteor. Negative meteorite and possible satellite re-entry were considered. The evaluation concluded no threat, with the object traveling northwest to southeast.

11. COMMENTS: Object reported to be moving S, time ruling out Echo I, as Echo was moving N at time of sighting. Object sighted was reported to be a streak of light. This description is characteristic of a meteor at a very high altitude. However also suggests a meteor.
