13.42 N. 137.11 E NEAR GUAM, June 1953June 1953
Summary
On June 5, 1953, about 1330Z, military aircrew over the Pacific southwest of Guam reported a green light. The witnesses were two Navy aircraft commanders flying military transport trips.
The first commander, flying at 9,000 feet, saw a green light that seemed to cover a wide area. It moved too slowly for a meteor and too fast for a flare. About ten minutes later, green light was seen ahead at about 20 miles. It came from above 12,000 feet, plunged straight down, and lit the ocean for miles. Later, near 1430Z and at 2,000 feet, the second commander saw what seemed to be a green flare at flight level.
The preparing officer believed the men saw part of a meteor burning up, since many meteors had been seen by other personnel on recent dates. He did not think it was a distress signal, because no aircraft or ships were reported in trouble nearby. The Air Force listed the case as astronomical (a meteor).
