Project Blue Book Case File
1 1/2 Mi SE Of Gills Rock, Wis., September 1959September 1959
Summary
On the early morning of September 13, 1959, a resident near Gills Rock, Wisconsin, reported witnessing an unusual object rising rapidly into the night sky. The witness, who was outdoors picking night crawlers around 1:05 a.m., first heard a loud pulsating noise similar to a jet engine. Within a few minutes, he saw a round, yellowish object with eight blue lights on its outer edge and five larger red lights in the center. The object rose straight up at tremendous speed until it resembled a star in the sky. The entire event lasted about ten minutes. The witness's mother and wife also heard the noise from inside their house, though they did not see the object itself. The sky was clear at the time. The observer immediately sketched what he had seen and was reluctant to report the sighting publicly.
The Air Force requested the witness complete a detailed technical questionnaire to gather more information for analysis. The witness estimated the object was about 200 feet away and described it as appearing as bright as eight 300-watt blue bulbs, with the red lights flickering and flaring like hot exhaust. However, no exhaust or jet stream was visible. The Air Force's file shows the report was forwarded through official channels from the Weather Bureau and the Air Research and Development Command to the Air Force Technical Intelligence Center at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The case file itself contains no final ATIC evaluation or conclusion regarding what the object was. The complete case file, comprising 35 pages, is held by the National Archives.
