Editorial summary
On November 7, 1957, the FBI interviewed Wladyslaw Krasuski, a Detroit resident and former German prisoner of war, regarding his account of an unusual vehicle he observed near a German military compound in 1944. Krasuski had initiated contact with Special Assistant to the President Robert Cutler after hearing news reports of a mysterious craft in Texas that allegedly caused automobile engines to stall. He believed his experience thirteen years earlier might be relevant to U.S. government inquiries.
According to the detailed interview conducted by Special Agent Cassius Rathbun, Krasuski recounted an incident occurring in an unspecified month of 1944 while he was working at or near Gut Alt Golssen, approximately 30 miles east of Berlin. The event began when a tractor carrying the work crew, composed of Russian, French, and Polish prisoners of war numbering 16 to 18 men, experienced engine failure on a road through a swamp area. Krasuski described hearing a high-pitched whining noise resembling a large electric generator at the time. An SS guard conversed briefly with the German tractor driver, after which the crew waited five to ten minutes until the noise ceased and the engine restarted normally.
Approximately three hours later in the same swamp region, Krasuski observed a circular enclosure approximately 100 to 150 yards in diameter, surrounded by a tarpaulin-type wall approximately 50 feet high. From this enclosure, a vehicle slowly rose vertically to clear the wall and then moved slowly horizontally before disappearing from view behind trees. Observed from roughly 500 feet away, the vehicle was described as circular, measuring 75 to 100 yards in diameter and about 14 feet in height. The craft featured dark gray stationary sections on top and bottom, each roughly five to six feet high, with a middle section approximately three feet thick that appeared to move rapidly, producing a continuous blur extending around the vehicle's circumference. The noise produced was similar in character but lower in pitch than the earlier sound. On this second occasion, the tractor engine again stalled and remained inoperative until the noise stopped.
The FBI report documents that uninsulated metal cables, possibly copper and measuring one and one-half to two inches in diameter, were observed both on and beneath the ground surface in the area, with some portions submerged in water. These cables apparently ran between the enclosure and a small concrete column-like structure situated between the road and the enclosed area. When Krasuski returned to the location shortly after World War II ended, the cables had been removed and the concrete structure and enclosure site were covered by water. The Special Agent noted that no indication of irrational or abnormal behavior was observed during the interview, and Krasuski's employment history, credit records, and residential information in Detroit were verified as consistent with his statements.
