Project Blue Book Case File
Wiesbaden, KGermany, July 1950July 1950
Summary
On the night of July 7, 1950, near Wiesbaden, Germany, radar operators tracked unidentified targets. The case is part of Project 10073, the Air Force's official record system for unidentified flying object reports. The witnesses were Air Force airmen using ground controlled approach radar to help land a U.S. aircraft.
Around 9:20 p.m. (2120Z), the operator noticed an extra target besides the plane he was guiding. A second operator confirmed it. After a few minutes, the target seemed to split into two or three blurred targets, spaced apart, that moved very fast in a counterclockwise pattern on the scope. They appeared to be 3 to 4 miles away. The targets were lost around 9:37 p.m. as the crew focused on the landing.
The operators thought the speed suggested jet aircraft, but the control tower said no jets were known to be flying nearby. An airman in town also reported hearing jet like sounds about that time. The Air Force record lists the conclusion as probably a balloon or a probable flight of jet aircraft.
