Project Blue Book Case File
Warsaw, N.M., October 1959October 1959
Summary
Before dawn on October 21, 1959, a civilian at Warsaw, New York, saw four bright lights for about 20 to 30 minutes. The witness, a race-horse trainer, was rated reliable. The lights were star-shaped and about the size of a half dollar, colored white and red.
Two of the lights formed a pair and the other two were scattered. The red color appeared like a tail that came and went. The lights were nearly stationary, directly overhead, except for one movement toward the south. They faded as daylight came. The night had scattered clouds.
Weather data showed a sharp temperature inversion at the 4,000 foot level. Local airports reported no scheduled flights in the area at the time. The Air Force concluded the conditions were such as to cause a superior mirage and attributed the lights to that effect. The card lists the case as a mirage from the inversion. This was part of Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports.
