Summary

On April 16, 1961, a civilian saw an object while driving west on a new section of Highway 90, from west of Seguin, Texas toward San Antonio. The object was in sight for about 5 minutes near dusk. The witness was a bartender who held a private flying license and was rated reliable.

The object was white and glowing and triangular in shape, with the long sides back to back and the sides looking curved. The witness estimated it at 300 to 400 feet long and 125 to 150 feet wide. It appeared motionless at an elevation of about 33 to 40 degrees.

The Air Force found that a balloon released about 1.5 hours earlier from the San Antonio airport fit all the observations. The prevailing winds would have placed the balloon in that area. The setting sun would reflect off the angled sides of the balloon. The case was concluded to be a balloon.
