Summary

On June 25, 1960, the pilot and co-pilot of a military aircraft saw an object near Midway Island in the Pacific. The sighting happened at night and lasted 5 to 8 seconds. The object was a greenish-yellow ball that was extremely brilliant. It left the impression of a trail across the sky and moved at very high speed from west to east. It disappeared about 15 degrees above the horizon, breaking into two pieces just before burning out. The light grew steadily brighter until burnout. Both pilots said it was unlike any shooting star they had seen. The weather was clear. The Air Force concluded the sighting was astronomical. The card compared it to earlier fireball sightings.
