Summary

On July 18, 1960, several witnesses saw a flaming object over the Verona, Italy area at about 7:35 p.m. The sighting lasted about 8 seconds. The object was bright white and circular, with a bluish white rear area. It had a tail about 8 times longer than the main body, with a blend of orange and red. It moved across the sky from south to north, about 80 degrees above the horizon, and seemed to travel horizontally. The main witness was a military officer. Children and several enlisted personnel nearby also saw it. An Army major in the Livorno area reported a similar sighting around the same time. The Air Force concluded the sighting was astronomical and probably a meteor.
