Summary

On July 31, 1956, around 8:20 a.m. local time, a civilian in Temple, Texas, reported a single object. The sighting lasted about one and a half to two minutes. The object was seen toward the west-southwest, about 30 degrees above the horizon.

The witness, a bookkeeper, described one round, globular object with a sharp outline and no wings or other parts. It was a brilliant, soft, milky white, like a glowing fluorescent lamp. It was about one fifth the size of a full moon, or three or four times larger than Venus. The object moved at a speed equal to or greater than a jet, in level and straight flight. It then slowly dimmed and faded out without breaking up. There was no vapor trail.

The witness later wrote that the object looked like one shown in a film about unidentified flying objects. He also noted a passenger plane crossed the area minutes after the object faded.

The Air Force concluded the sighting was probably an aircraft.
