Summary
On January 23, 1959, a civilian southwest of Herschel Island, Canada, reported an object low in the sky. The man was taking weather observations at a remote station. The object was watched for about 32 minutes around dawn (0800Z).
He described one round object with a flat bottom, about the size of half an orange held at arm's length, and orange in color. It appeared to be stationary, about 3 or 4 degrees above the surface, on a bearing of 310 degrees and about 3 or 4 miles away. When watched steadily there seemed to be slight movement. It disappeared suddenly without fading or moving.
The Air Force concluded the object was astronomical. Officials said the long duration and lack of movement led them to believe it was the moon. A check showed the moon was in the exact position, partly hidden by cloud just above the horizon.
