Summary

On February 14, 1957, an Air Force detachment at Stead Air Force Base, Nevada, reported a single object. The witnesses included a control tower operator and a weather observer. The case was logged under Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports. The object was a flat, oval shape about the size of a nickel, with a blue center, a green ring, and a red light flashing in the middle, like two saucers placed face to face.

The object stayed in nearly the same spot for about two hours, then moved rapidly to the right toward azimuth 245 degrees and dimmed until it looked like a star. It was at about 20 degrees elevation and was viewed through binoculars. The red light flashed about 12 times a minute. The sky had broken clouds.

The Air Force concluded the object was probably the bright star Arcturus, which records placed in that position. The card noted that broken clouds moving between the witnesses and the star would give it a flashing and color changing look. The evaluation given was probably astronomical.
