Summary
On the night of July 22, 1950, near Spartanburg, South Carolina, a young couple at a drive in movie reported a strange object. The witnesses were a civilian couple, Vernon and Betty Gwynne, and the file is based on a newspaper account and an Army interview. The theater was about 3 miles from the city.
The husband said he first noticed a low, cloud like form that took shape, rounded on the bottom and fairly flat. A mist or smoke seemed to surround it. He estimated the bottom was very large, maybe 200 feet across, at about 2,000 feet altitude. Two men in the next car also watched. The object appeared three separate times over about an hour, each lasting a few minutes.
The first two times it was in the same spot near a light pole. The third time it had moved lower and to the right, and its rounded bottom was brightly lit. A control tower operator at the local airport reportedly said the same object had been seen from there. The Air Force record card lists no firm conclusion.
