Summary

On April 17, 1960, military observers saw a glowing object in the night sky at Richards-Gebaur Air Force Base, Missouri. The time was about 8:30 a.m. local time, given as 1429 to 1431.5 GMT. The base is about 20 miles south of Kansas City.

The observers were viewing the Orion area through a six inch telescope when they saw the object. It appeared north of the belt of Orion, about 30 degrees above the horizon. It moved in an arc toward the southwest, passed about one degree south of the bright star Sirius, and dropped below the horizon. The object had a reddish glow and stayed steady in size and color. The observers watched it for about 2.5 minutes. The Air Force asked for more information but received no answer.

This report was filed under Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports. The Air Force said no conclusion could be offered and listed the case as unidentified.
